Quinta da Portela
Welcome!
Two hours' drive from Porto and 30 kilometers from the Spanish border is our biodynamic farm, Quinta da Portela. With 19 ha of land in the Unesco Serra da Estrela Natural Park and in the valley of the Mondego River. Our quinta offers peace and space and amazingly beautiful views. There are about 700 olive trees on our property, from which top quality biodynamic olive oil is harvested every year. There are also various water mines and water sources with clean and mineral-rich water: our own spring water comes from the tap! In addition to olive trees, there are many different fruit and almond trees, there is an organic vegetable garden, fifty sheep, two horses, six chickens and some dogs and cats live there. Our terraces with vines are located on the warm slope.
For our guests there are six different, fully furnished studios with private bathroom. For families there is a private house with two bedrooms, bathroom with bathtub and a large living room with open kitchen.

Who are we
We are Manda and Jasper.
Two individuals with a common dream: to live and work in a special place, where we can live as self-sufficiently as possible.
Beauty
In 2020 we decided to live in Portugal and we started looking for a place with clean water and organic farmland. Our search brought us to the Dominio Vale do Mondego and, overwhelmed by its beauty, we knew immediately that this would be our place!
Biodynamic farming
With great respect for people and animals and we farm here in a biodynamic way. In addition to farming, we enjoy sharing this healthy environment with guests: letting people unwind and relax.
ACCOMMODATION
We have six studios, each with its own atmosphere. Studios 1, 2 and 3 are romantically furnished and in the typical style of this region. Studios 4, 5 and 6 have a modern look, with terrace and fantastic views over the olive grove and valley. All studios have a private bathroom and are equipped for two people. In some studios there is room for extra (children's) beds.
For families there is a private house with two bedrooms, a bathroom with bathtub, its own open kitchen and a large fireplace. Both the studios and the family house are provided with towels and bed linen.
In high season we rent for a minimum of 7 nights.

INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR STAY
Breakfast
When you stay with us, breakfast is included! Farm-fresh every morning and of your choice: on the terrace at the quinta or privately at your studio.
Free Wifi
It is of course nice to relax on holiday, but if necessary, there is free WiFi in the common areas.
Food and drinks
Three times a week we cook for our guests, you can register for this. At the outdoor bar we serve drinks and homemade ice cream, sandwiches and snacks. And, on request, we make a delicious filled picnic basket, for on the road or somewhere on our property; there is room enough to find a private place.
Vegetable garden and sheep
Next to the olive grove there is an organic vegetable garden and fruit and almond trees (feel free to pick whatever you feel like!) such as apricot, quince, pear, apple, cherry, plum and almond trees. We also tend a flock of Bordalaira sheep, which are typical for this area. The terraces with vines are located on the 'warm' side of our domain.
Water Spot
There is a nice water spot on the property at the quinta. Ideal for small children, but of course adults can also cool off here: nice with your legs in the water and a drink in your hand. This water spot is filled with fresh spring water, from our own source.
The Dôme, special events
For special events, such as a wedding, family celebration or a private dinner, we have the wonderful Dôme by artist Peter van de Pol on our property. With a diameter of 12 meters and a height of six meters, this Dôme gives a unique atmosphere. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities, we are happy to think along and creatively
Prices and reservations
How nice of you to visit us, you are more than welcome!
We rent out our studios for € 143.00 per night, in the low season this is € 110.00 per night.
All studios are equipped for two people, including bed linen and towels and have a private, spacious bathroom. One or two extra beds can be added in consultation:
€ 25.00 pppn (placement of a baby cot is free).
The family house can be rented for
€ 252.00 per night. In the low season this is € 220.00 per night.
All prices include breakfast. In the high season we rent for a minimum of 7 nights, in the low season this is 3 nights.
Reservations can be made via the reservation system on this site. Preferences, special diets can be passed on by e-mail.
NB: A number of terraces are suitable for motorhomes. Send us an email if you are interested in this, and we'll see what is possible.

AREA INFORMATION
Quinta da Portela is located about 30 kilometers from the Spanish border, in the largest natural park in Portugal: 'Parque Natural da Serra Estrela (the star mountain) and within walking distance of the Mondego river with beaches and swimming spots. Around the corner is a beautiful reservoir where you can paddle, canoe and swim.
Hiking trails
There are several hiking trails in the immediate vicinity, some of which date back to Roman times. In the Parque da Estrela there are 375 hiking trails with all kinds of different levels of difficulty.

Nearby city: Guarda
It is about a 15-minute drive to Guarda, a beautiful and cozy town with terraces, restaurants, shops, a huge cathedral (Sé) on a beautiful square. There is a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, where the locals sell their fruit and vegetables grown in their own vegetable gardens. There are butchers and bakers and the home-brewed fruit liqueur (Aguardente, derived from áqua ardente, translated; fiery water) can be bought here.
Culture
There is a lot of culture to discover. Such as the so-called '12 Aldeias Historicas' where Celts, Romans, Christians, Arabs and Jews left their own cultural influences, are very diverse and impressive. In 2021, gastronomic and cultural events will be organized to highlight these villages full of history. More information can be found here.
How to get to us
Quinta da Portela is located a 2-hour drive from Porto. The Spanish border is 30 kilometers away. The easiest way is to fly to Porto (there are many attractive rates) and rent a car from there. We make sure that you receive a detailed description on how to get here before your arrival!
